How to Balance Work and Family at ESYON

ESYON: Marit, please tell us which area you work in and how you came to ESYON.

Marit: I am employed as a consultant at ESYON and handle the consulting and project conceptualization for the PIM system Perfion. The goal is to configure the software specifically for the customer so that their data model and requirements are reflected in the application. My tasks also include providing training to customers in the system. I became aware of the Consultant position at ESYON through a private contact.

To be honest, I hadn't even read the job profile on the website beforehand. There was an early direct exchange about the requirements and wishes of both sides, and I felt very comfortable with the decision to become part of the ESYON team.

ESYON: What were the important factors for you in making your decision?

Marit: Autonomous work is essential to me. This includes how I organize my day and tasks, as well as how I set priorities and manage my schedule. I found all of this at ESYON.

Personally, I also like to be well-informed, and I am impressed by the transparent information policy at ESYON. From a previous work experience, I know how unsettling it can be for employees not to have access to all the news or to receive them only based on a specific job level. It's great not to have such hierarchies here at ESYON.

"I appreciate that as a consultant, I have a lot of freedom, and solutions are always discussed on an equal footing."

- Martin Mohr, PIM solution architect

ESYON: What does your workday as a consultant look like?

Marit: I usually try to structure my day in a way that I serve a maximum of two customers. Besides checking the current project status and related tasks, I support the implementation of Perfion in the company. For example, if the project has just started, the initial analysis and structuring are also part of my responsibilities. Above all, I find it essential to be able to work on tasks calmly and continuously for several hours.

Any administrative issues and processes are minimized. As a team, we can quickly respond and coordinate and communicate efficiently.

"At ESYON, I have a work environment where I can really focus, and you can clearly notice the progress in the project."

ESYON: How do you communicate with the customer, and do you travel a lot as a consultant?

Marit: About 20 percent of my tasks involve communication with the customer. This includes not only the initial kick-off but also training sessions, the final project handover, and coordination during the project. A significant part of this can be done remotely today, so the number of in-person days per month is very low. Especially considering the current Corona conditions, we and our customers appreciate communication via online platforms and digital meeting tools. The online affinity of our customers, resulting from their e-commerce industry environment, also makes remote work easier.

ESYON: How do you balance work and family life?

Marit: The flexibility of communication can also be seamlessly applied to working hours and location. I consciously chose to work a 35-hour week so that I can spend the afternoon with my children. For doctor's appointments or, for example, appointments with craftsmen, I can adjust my time flexibly and come to work later or work calmly from home. Of course, it is clear that customer deadlines and appointments need to be met, and you need to orient yourself accordingly. So, it can happen that you put in extra hours in one week and then take time off the following week to spend more time with the family.

"Following the motto: A healthy body, a healthy mind – many employees use the flexible working hours to go to the gym or jog before work."

ESYON: What else contributes to a good work-life balance for you?

Marit: Personally, I find it a luxury that we have a canteen in our office building. This means you don't have to worry about meals. As colleagues, we often go to lunch together. Since my entire week with the children is very scheduled, and there is little time for social interaction, I really enjoy these friendly gatherings.

ESYON: Dear Marit, thank you for your honest words and interesting insights. We are looking forward to many more joint projects and a continued pleasant collaboration.
