Everyday work as a developer at ESYON: Interview with Markus Süllau

In the recent past, we have already given some of our employees a platform to talk about their everyday working life. Carla Bokel, for example, has already given us some insights into the start of her career at ESYON and Wulfgar Siewert reported on his first experiences as a dual student.

In the following, we would like to take a closer look at the day-to-day work of a developer at ESYON. Markus Süllau was kind enough to give us an interview. In this article, you can read what he particularly likes about his position and what ESYON means to him.

Markus Süllau is part of the developer team at ESYON. Originally from Bavaria, he moved to Leipzig in 2013 to study computer science. Markus has already been working for ESYON since October 2017 and previously gained initial experience in the areas of e-commerce and ERP. In addition to his role as a developer, he also trains and advises customers on how to use our Amazon Marketplace Connector.

ESYON as an employer: solution-oriented with flat hierarchies

To get started, we want to know a few things about Markus. Born in Bavaria, he moved to Leipzig in 2013 to study computer science. Through a series of internships, he gained his first experiences in the areas of e-commerce and ERP, especially SAP, where he also worked as a consultant after his studies. With the desire to further deepen his knowledge in these areas, he began his career at ESYON in 2017. At the time of the interview, Markus is already in his 6th year with us.

“I particularly liked the pleasant working atmosphere and the flat hierarchies. Cooperation and communication take place at eye level. Every employee is heard and valued. We also work in a very solution-oriented way. It is also easy to reconcile work and private life. Flexible working hours and a home office make this possible.

Reading tip: Marit Mohr already told us a lot about the work-life balance at ESYON in an earlier interview.

A wide variety of tasks ensure variety in the workplace

Markus gives us a small insight into his daily work: As a developer, he is advancing our Amazon integration for Microsoft Dynamics. This mainly involves maintenance tasks. These are necessary to keep the software up-to-date, Markus says. The conversion of our solution to a new Amazon API alone kept him busy for almost a whole year. However, pure software development only covers part of his area of responsibility. “I also do a lot of customer support and consulting. In a small company, you have a lot of variety as a developer. Training our customers in how to use the Amazon Marketplace Connector is something I particularly enjoy.”

As a developer, Markus also implements individual requirements of our customers. Although there are common denominators, the parameters for sales and warehouses, for example, are often very different, he says. With millions of customers, Amazon offers an immense reach, but numerous fees, differences in tax law between countries and the lack of transparency of the group make selling via the marketplace a complex matter.

With his daily work on our Connector, Markus helps traders to better understand these complex issues and to receive appropriate feedback in case of errors.

The developer cares a lot about his product

Finally, we wanted to know from Markus what his greatest wishes and goals are for the future at ESYON. His answer, which he formulated without much thought, shows that the Amazon Connector has already become a matter of the heart for the young family man.

“Above all, I want to develop the AMC further and make the solution even better”, Markus explains. Understandably, he can’t tell us exactly what these improvements will look like yet. But we will share this information as soon as it is ready!

Reading tip: We are constantly developing our products further and shortly before this interview rolled out a release with new functions for the Amazon Marketplace Connector. We explain what the new features are in this article.
